Fluency
What is fluency?
“Reading fluency refers to efficient, effective word recognition skills that permit a reader to construct meaning of text. Fluency is manifested in accurate, rapid, expressive oral reading and is applied during, and makes possible, silent reading comprehension (Pukulski & Chard, 2005) (LETRS, pg. 289).”
Basically, when we can read words correctly, quickly, and with expression, one can focus on what the words mean. Fluency helps build understanding.
- Accuracy - correctly identifies letter names, sounds, and words
- Automaticity or Rate - quickly knows letters or words without thinking
- Prosody - reading with expression
