What is Literacy?
Literacy refers to the ability to read and write. It is a basic skill that allows individuals to comprehend and communicate through written language.
Why is Literacy important?
Being able to read and write is really important. It helps you communicate well, understand things better, and access information. When people can read, it makes societies stronger and more informed, and it lets everyone take part in important activities, like work and community life.
How does Cranston teach literacy?  What does it look like in each grade?
Kindergarten Students learn to love books, recognize letters and sounds, and start to read and write simple words. It's the first step to reading success.
Grade 1 Students learn to read simple words and sentences, understand basic punctuation, and express ideas in writing. It's the start of their reading and writing journey.
Grade 2  Literacy is about reading basic stories, understanding them, and writing simple sentences. It's building the foundation for stronger reading and writing skills.
Grade 3 Students learn and understand harder material, use more words, and write better to express their thoughts more clearly.
Grade 4
Students learn new words, understand complicated texts, and write better to express their thoughts more clearly and with more detail.
Grade 5 Students confidently read, understand, and express ideas in written form. It involves exploring different genres and building advanced vocabulary and comprehension skills.
Grade 6 Literacy involves reading varied materials with depth, expressing ideas through writing, and mastering complex concepts. It's about advanced reading and effective communication skills.
Grade 7 Literacy is about reading different material (genres), thinking carefully about them, and expressing smart ideas in writing. It's about advanced comprehension and effective communication skills.
Grade 8 Literacy means skillfully reading, analyzing various texts, and expressing complex ideas through writing. It's about becoming a strong communicator and critical thinker.
Grade 9 Literacy involves reading diverse texts, analyzing them critically, and expressing subtle ideas through advanced writing. It's about sophisticated communication and deep comprehension skills.
Grade 10 Literacy means skillfully reading, thinking critically about various texts, and expressing complex ideas through advanced writing. It's about being a strong communicator and thinker.
