First grade is an
exciting and challenging year, which serves as a
foundation for future
learning. Children will develop socially, emotionally and intellectually, each
at his or her pace and developmental level.
Our language arts program
is full of exciting stories and new skills. Children
read daily-
individually, in groups and with the whole class. The will learn
decoding skills, which will
help figure out unfamiliar words. Phonemic
awareness
and seeing patterns in words will be emphasized. In writing, children will
learn about writing
sentences and then progress to writing short coherent
paragraphs. They will write narratives, explanatory, and
factual stories.
In
Math, our series is called Investigations. Students will learn by using
manipulatives,
pattern blocks and games. Problem
solving will be an
important part of math, is it prepares them for real life
experiences.
Please
read with your child daily, reinforcing what
he/she is learning in school.
Homework
will be given on most days-help your child to become
an organized, prepared
student. Habits that begin now will
carry
on throughout the school years.
Most importantly,
remember that communication between
parent and school is very important.
Please feel free to
contact us if you have questions or concerns.
Together, we can help
your children become the best students they can be.
