Mission Statement
The mission of the Cranston Public Schools World
Language Educator is to provide students with the knowledge that language and
communication are at the heart of the human experience. The Cranston Public
schools will educate students to interact linguistically and culturally in a
pluralistic American society and abroad. We envision that ALL students
will develop and maintain proficiency in English and at least one other World
Language.
WORLD LANGUAGE PROGRAM OUTLINE
Western Hills Middle School currently offers World
Language (French, Italian and Spanish) to all students in grades 7, and 8. The
program is based on the newly designed World Language Middle School Curriculum
adopted by our school system.
The four language learning skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing
and World Language Standards are paired with GLE's (Grade Level Expectations
for Language Arts).
Seventh graders have the opportunity to choose a language and continue studying it in the eighth grade. The program is designed to achieve Level I (High School) proficiency during grades 7 and 8. If the students pass both levels, they will be able to be placed in Level 2 of the same language in grade 9. Classes meet four times weekly for the entire year and are now part of the content areas.
This program also emphasizes oral
communication, survival skills, and real life situations. The students will
be exposed to the evolving nature of World Languages and will learn strategies
that will prove to be beneficial not only for future language study, but also
for the enhancement of expressing language skills.
