Civics & Government and Historical Perspectives/Rhode Island History: Grades 5-8
Seventh Grade Social Studies at Park View Middle School:
In seventh grade the incoming students will learn about a variety of cultures and locations around the world, utilizing a skills based curriculum. Each class will explore the five themes of geography, which is the basis of one of the department’s common tasks. The children will expand upon their skills of reading, writing and processing of information with a focus on the western hemisphere. Social studies is the amalgamation of all the disciplines and is an ideal catalyst to further the development of skills needed to be successful in the eighth grade as well as high school!
There are four texts used along with a variety of supplemental materials in all of the classes. The texts consist of: The United States and Canada, Latin America, Geography and Medieval Times to Today. Each team exchanges book quarterly so every student has an opportunity to explore all of the regions. The social studies curriculum is aligned with the state of Rhode Island department of Education’s Grade Level Expectations. You can find the links on the Park View social studies page. Eighth Grade Social Studies at Park View Middle School:
8th Grade students at Park View study U.S. history from 1607 to 1877. Topics of study include: colonization; causes and effects of the American Revolution; the Constitution; the early Republic; Jacksonian democracy; westward expansion; slavery and the causes of the War Between the States; the U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction.
Common Task Assessments will occur during 1st and 2nd semesters.
