SPRING CLEANING THE NOSE , THROAT & SINUS CAVITIES
The mucous in our nose and sinus cavities traps viruses, bacteria, fungus, pollen , and dirt particles.  It is then swept away towards the throat. Without adequate fluids and humidity, the mucous becomes thick and heavy causing inflammation, congestion, discomfort and even infection.
To enable this transport system, especially if you have sinus problems, try the following:
-Drink an adequate amount of non-caffeinated fluids every day ( see March nurse’s notes )
-Use nasal saline spray frequently,  i.e. every 2-3 hours
-Expose  yourself to steam 1-2 times per day ( shower, facial steamer, etc. )
-Gargle with warm salt water ( ¼ tsp to cup of water )
- Try a neti pot ( nasal irrigation system )
Aah… now stop and smell the roses.

AN EASY, INEXPENSIVE CURE-ALL?
March, 2012
We all know we’re supposed to drink 8 glasses of water a day – really?? No, not really…
So how much should you drink to avoid dehydration? A more accurate estimate would be to divide your weight in pounds by 2 and drink at least that amount in ounces every day.  Of course, there are times when you tend to lose more fluid and will want to increase that daily amount – such as during sickness and increased activity.  If you don’t like plain water, add a lemon wedge to that water bottle . Better yet, purchase an inexpensive fruit infuser ($ 25) and make your own flavored water without all the additives and for a lot less money. It’s a perfect way to use the fruit that’s just starting to go and no one wants to eat anyway.                                 SO JUST DO IT! Here’s why…

  1. Drinking water helps you lose weight by suppressing the appetite and flushing down the by-products of fat breakdown.
  2. Helps relieve headaches and back pains due to dehydration
  3. Helps replenish skin tissues, moisturize skin, and increase skin elasticity
  4. Helps you think better, be more alert, and more concentrated ( your brain is mostly water )
  5.  Helps you exercise with more energy ( water fuels muscle tissue and regulates body temp)
  6. Helps digestion and constipation ( raises your metabolism )
  7. Helps lubricate joints and muscles so you’ll  less likely get cramps and sprains
  8. Helps build immunity (especially with lemon added)  so you’re less likely to get sick
  9. Helps relieve fatigue by flushing out toxins and carrying oxygen to tired organs
  10. Helps improve your mood because your body feels better
  11. Helps reduce the risks of bladder and colon cancer by diluting the concentration of cancer causing agents and by shortening the time they are stored in the body

IS IT THE FLU OR JUST A COLD?
November, 2011
The flu is often confused with the common cold, but flu symptoms tend to come on quickly; and they are generally more severe than the sneezing ,coughing ,and sore throat associated with a cold. In addition, flu is often accompanied by fever, headache, extreme fatigue, muscle aches; and in children, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are also common.
Students who have been diagnosed with the flu must be symptom freedom free (without the use of fever reducing medicine) for a full 24 hours before returning to school. A student who is seen by a physician and started on antibiotics for a bacterial infection should stay out of school for 24 hours after treatment has begun.
All incidences of communicable diseases such as flu, chicken pox, head lice, impetigo, strep throat, Fifth’s disease, scarlet fever, and herpes simplex should be reported to the school nurse-teacher. The student’s return to school will be discussed and planned at that time.

Seasonal flu vaccine is recommended by the Department of Health for everyone 6 months of age and older – unless the person has a specific contraindication to the vaccine. Contact your physician if you have any concerns about receiving the vaccine.
Flu activity commonly peaks in January and February, but the flu virus can cause illness from October to May. The best proven way to prevent the spread of germs and infections is frequent hand washing with soap and warm water. This practice should be enforced at home as well as in public.
