Second Grade Happenings

2009-2010

Here are a few things to help get you and your child organized in second grade:

ü Every student has received a Hope Highlands folder, which was supplied by the school PTO. The folder is to be used for homework, assignments, notices to parents and corrected papers. It will go home every night. Please take a few minutes each night to check it.

ü Planners should be brought back and forth to school every day. Students will write their spelling words and assignments in them. Please sign them every night.

ü Homework is used to teach your child to be responsible. We will never give anything that has not been previously taught in class. It is your child’s responsibility to complete the assignment and then return it to school the following day.

ü In order to encourage good behavior we use a dot system. Every child starts every day with a green dot. If needed they will be given a warning and asked to change their dot to yellow. If they need to be spoken to again they will have to change their dot to red. A note will then go home and they will lose recess. Every will start every day with a green dot.

ü We encourage everyone to take 15-20 minutes a night to listen to your child read. It is good practice for them and they will love the extra attention!

Language Arts: We are reading stories from the basal about exploration. We will be working on writing stories about ourselves.

Math: We are working on counting coins so please take some time to work with your child. It can be very difficult to count on in different denominations. We will focus on counting pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.

Science: We are learning about living things and their habitats. We are hoping to schedule a visit from the zoo mobile.

Social Studies: We are learning about families, neighborhoods and communities.
