 Teacher’s Goal

It is my goal to provide students a safe and comfortable learning environment based on mutual respect between teacher and students.  Students are encouraged to be engaged in learning so they will develop into active citizens in our society.

Classroom Rules

Our class rules are reflective of how students desire to be treated and how they agree to treat others.  The rules and consequences were designed by the students.

Homework

·   Spelling homework will be assigned Monday, Tuesday,  Wednesday,         and Thursday.  A test will be given on Friday.  Spelling words will be sent home on Monday to prepare for Friday’s test. Ask your children about Stair Step Spelling.  It's a new way to practice their spelling words!

.    Math practice will be given on most nights.  Try making arrays  with            your  child to practice multiplication.

·    Other assignments such as Social Studies or Science may also be given at times, so please check your child's planner for assignments.

·    Students should be reading a book of their choice for at least 15 minutes each night.  A home reading log will be used to keep track of their reading at home. They will need an adult to initial this each day along with their planner.

·    If homework is incomplete or not turned in the student will complete the assignment during recess.

CLASSROOM NEWS

·         WRITING:                                             Writing Workshop:  All students have improved their writing skills.  They are currently working on a "How-to" report.

·         SSR:                                                         30 minutes of Silent Sustained Reading is scheduled 4 times a week.  The whole class has learned this routine well and reading fluency is improving.

·         CLASSROOM CENTERS:                                  The students are becoming familiar with various educational centers.  The centers provide opportunities for the students to practice their skills when they finish their class work. Centers include:

Computer-students have been visiting some of the websites below.

Geography-students study the map of the United States and put together a puzzle.

Writing-students practice using vivid language to paint a picture in their reader's head.

Math-students can practice various math skills.  They are working on multiplication tables.

Handwriting-students can work on their cursive writing.

 Reading

·     Our reading series, Reading Street, integrates spelling, grammar, reading, and writing.

·    Silent Sustained Reading:  This time is used to conference with the students about their reading comprehension, monitor fluency, and help them learn strategies for improving reading and conduct mClass assessments.

.    If you would like to learn more about Reading Street, read the Family Times that goes home with your child at the beginning of each new Unit.

Math

.    This year the class will continue to explore numbers through the Investigations series.

·    The students will frequently be working with partners during math in order to gain a deeper understanding of mathematical operations, problem solving, and number sense.

.    To learn more about Investigations, read the Family Letter with your child.  It is sent home at the beginning of each new unit.

Social Studies

In social studies the class will begin learning about communities.  We will connect this unit to our “classroom of community helpers” as we discuss and learn what it means to be an active, helpful member of a community.

 Science

In Science we will be learning about our Solar System, Life Cycles, Earth's Resources, and Matter, Energy & Forces.  Science kits will be used throughout the year to offer students the opportunity to explore science using a hands on approach.

We're working on an experiment using pumpkins to explore the properties of matter.
