Kindergarten

Mrs. Diane Zapasnik

Welcome to KINDERGARTEN! The kindergarten program is an integrated curriculum with a strong focus on literacy and math skills. It is my goal to provide a wealth of experiences that will encourage optimum growth and development for every child. A great deal of learning and fun will be in your child’s half-day kindergarten experience. I will send home a weekly newsletter to reinforce our parent-teacher relationship. It is my hope that your child develops a true love of learning and will leave with a strong foundation for future years.

Here are some “highlights” of our curriculum:

 READING

We will be using a new reading series called “Reading Street” by Scott Foresmann. Skills that we will focus on are letter recognition, phonemic awareness, decoding, comprehension, vocabulary development, and sight word recognition.

WRITING

Kindergarten children enjoy writing the letters and sounds that they know with our “Kid Writing” program. An adult sits with the child to help them ‘stretch’ their words to hear sounds. We will be keeping monthly journals.

 MATH

Our math program is called ‘Investigations’. Children will be using many “hands on” manipulatives and materials to help them make sense of mathematical ideas. Some of the topics covered will be patterning, measurement, geometric shapes, addition and subtraction, data analysis, and problem solving.

 SOCIAL STUDIES

Our social studies curriculum goals are learning to work with others, awareness of our community, community helpers, recognition of national and state symbols, and an understanding of some historical events.

 SCIENCE

The science curriculum has four units. The Human Body, Characteristics of Living Things, Earth and Sky, and The Five Senses.

As you can see, we really have a lot to do in our 2 ½ hours of school each day. I am dedicated to providing each child with a great start to their education. With parental involvement and cooperation, every child can meet success in kindergarten.
