Math

We will be using the Investigations Program. Our first unit was “Factors, Multiples, and Arrays” which focused on multiplication facts and concepts. Although we will be reviewing our multiplication facts, children must continue to strengthen their addition and subtraction facts as well.. During the year, the children are expected to know all addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.  Once they know these facts, learning more difficult concepts will be easier to grasp..          www.investigations.terc.edu

In class we will continue with FASTT Math, which will enable students to become proficient with math facts.

Science

In science we will be working on scientific ways of thinking and observing.  Our four units of study will be:

Classifying Living Things

Magnetism and Electricity

Properties of Matter

Weather and Climate

Students will enjoy the hands-on activities during their Science units. Both teachers will alternate teaching these units.

Social Studies

The fourth grade curriculum focuses on the five Regions of the United States. One of the expectations is that students will know the location of the states as well as their capitals.  Mrs. Ferro and Mrs. Higgins will both be teaching social studies to the fourth grade classes.

Language Arts

This year we will continue with the Reading Street reading program. We will also be using the grammar and spelling books that accompany this program.  Along with this series, we hope to use trade books throughout the year. We encourage reading different genres so that the children can become familiar with a variety of writing styles.  Reading 25 books is a fourth grade level expectation. This goal helps to develop vocabulary and comprehension skills.  In addition, the students will learn to express ideas clearly in written language.
