The Rhode Island Department of Human Services contracted with RIAEYC (Rhode Island Association for the Education of Young Children) and its partners to serve as an education and resource portal for child care professionals, providers, and consumers. Rhode Island Kids Count coordinates and supports the evaluation of BrightStars. The Resource Center will provide parents and families with information and referrals to access quality child care and school-age programs, offer high-quality professional development, training, and technical assistance to child care professionals, and work to create linkages among existing initiatives and services.

Child care programs for children from 3-5 yrs. of age of low income and/or working parents. Programs include education, socialization, nutrition, health, transportation, and social services. The DHS Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) is Rhode Island’s child care subsidy program that helps eligible families pay for child care. To participate in the program parents must apply to the Department of Human Services (DHS) and meet certain eligibility and criteria. Once approved, the parent chooses a provider to care for their children from an extensive list of CCAP approved providers.

Child Outreach is a free service sponsored by the RI Department of Education offered through your local school system that provides families with information about their child's development and offers information about other resources that are available in the community.

Child Outreach is designed for all children between the ages of 3 and 5.

A comprehensive federally funded program that serves pregnant women and children up to age 3. The EHS program provides educational, child development skills, socialization, counseling for parents and their children, and day care for income eligible children and families. Parents are expected to participate in many program activities with their children. Services are offered to children with disabilities.

Early Intervention promotes the development of infants and toddlers with developmental challenges and is designed to serve eligible children from birth to age 3 and their families. First Connections uses home visits to support families and their children during the early years of childhood development by giving them the information and services they need to be as healthy as possible. This home visiting program offers an effective mechanism to ensure ongoing parental education, social support, and linkages with public and private community services. The program also provides HEALTH with a variety of data on the well-being and needs of families.

First Connections work with Rhode Island's Newborn Screening Program to offer voluntary home visits to families with young children, birth to age three. Trained nurses, social workers, and community health workers visit parents and young children in their home with visits that are scheduled at times convenient for the family. Home visitors can answer all types of questions, including questions on: beastfeeding, nutrition, safe sleeping, child development, home safety, postpartum depression, programs and resources available for children, parents and families

There is no charge to families for visits. Visits are based on the specific needs of the parent and child and are different for every family. The agency that provides First Connections visits in Cranston is Children’s Friend and Service, 721-6400.

PAT is a program of the Cranston Family Center, based on the belief that parents are their child's first and most important teacher. The program provides personal visits by trained educators. Members enroll in a participating health plan:  UnitedHealthcare of New England or Neighborhood Health Plan of RI. Eligibility is based on income and family size. Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing food relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States. T

There are no qualifications, minimums, income restrictions, or applications. Everyone is encouraged to participate. Orders and distribution are handled by church host sites.  Generally, one unit of food assists in feeding a family of four for about one week or a single senior citizen for almost a month. Angel Food is available in a quantity that can fit into a medium-sized box at $30 per unit. Each month's menu is different than the previous month and consists of both fresh and frozen items with an average retail value of approximately $60.

The Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources (RIOER) works to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy in the State of Rhode Island. The Office offers programs to assist residents, businesses, cities and towns, and institutions with their energy needs. The Department of Parks and Recreation maintains several facilities for school sports, youth athletics, and citizen usage. Permits are required to ensure the use of ball fields and tennis courts. Special rules and regulations are posted.  Information pertaining to youth organizations or programs can be obtained by calling the Department of Parks and Recreation. The Department of Parks and Recreation offers a six-week playground program during the months of July and August.

The Peter Pastore Youth Center, built in 1998 and recently rededicated in honor of Peter Pastore, is open to teens to pursue interests and activities after school, evenings, and weekends. The focus of the center will be to provide the youth in the City of Cranston with a wide variety of recreational, educational, and social activities, as well as homework assistance, access to computers, counseling, meditation and of entertainment. The center is staffed by YMCA personnel and is open Monday through Friday from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM. There is an annual registration fee. The PPYC has a gymnasium available for rental by teams and a classroom/meeting room also available for rental. Please contact the Cranston YMCA at 943-0444 for reservations.
