Cranston Area Career & Technical Center,  (401) 270-8070.

The School to Career department of the Career Center offers students the opportunity to explore careers through three different programs: Internships, Co-op and Job Shadowing.

Competent students who receive a recommendation from their instructor, may request placement with, or a visit to, a local business.  Placement is usually restricted to students who have demonstrated  achievement, maturity, good attendance and a willingness to accept constructive criticism.

Through this cooperative arrangement between the school and local employers, students may receive actual on-the-job training as part of their career and technical education, and gain credit towards graduation.

Internships

Internships are non-paid experiences designed to reinforce classroom instruction and link it to the world of work.  Interns go to work twice a week from the school.  The students are graded based on their job performance.

Internship opportunities range from local high school and health facilities to private businesses.  Some of these facilities include: the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training, the Garden City Center, the Cedar Crest Nursing Center, the Feinstein Alzheimer Center and Victoria Court.

Co-op

The Cooperative Education program (Co-op) offers paid positions in various fields.  Co-op students receive credit for work while earning pay.  Participation encourages juniors and seniors to observe what traits and characteristics employers are looking for and to be ready for possible post-graduation employment.

Some businesses participating in the Co-op program include: the Atwood Animal Hospital, Blockbuster Video, Brewed Awakenings, the Cranston School Department, Deignan Dental, Eddie Bauer, and Union Bank.

Job Shadowing

Another feature of the School to Career program is job shadowing.  Job Shadowing allows students a one-day opportunity to visit various companies, observe daily operations and answer the question "Why do I have to learn this?"
