Internet
Searching
Keep in mind:
- A directory is a list of
preselected web sites.
- Yahooligans, KidsClick, and
Alfy are directories. They have selected sites which are of
interest to children in elementary schools.
- Even if you use the search
box on the Yahooligans Home Page, you are only searching the
Yahooligans Directory.
- A search engine performs a
robot search of the Internet and returns to you exactly what you
request.
- We use Alta Vista as our
search engine of choice at Barrows. The "Family Filter" will help
to find sites that are appropriate for families.
Tips on Using
Alta Vista
- Use capital letters for
specific people, places and things.
Benjamin
Franklin
- Use the word AND to be more
specific.
Antarctica and penguins (This
eliminates sites selling stuffed animals or zoos with penguin
exhibits and returns a list of sites all of which have the words
Antarctica and penguins in them.)
- Use quotation marks for
words that belong together.
"Mary had a little
lamb"
When the search engine returns
its "hits" to you:
- Read the
annotation
- Check the date the site was
posted or updated
- Look at the URL. Who is the
author of the site?
.edu educational
institution
.gov government
agency
.org usually nonprofit
organization
.com commercial group (usually
they have something to sell)
